Starfish Varieties

Before we dive into the fun projects, let’s chat about the different types of starfish. While there are so many beautiful varieties out there, pencil finger starfish (as shown above) really catch my eye! With their unique, slender arms, they bring a whimsical elegance to any decor. Plus, they’re a bit more delicate than traditional starfish, making them a fabulous choice for adding that beachy flair without being too heavy.

Their light and airy vibe fits perfectly with a coastal aesthetic, while their subtle textures enhance your decor without overpowering the space. Whether you go for pencil finger starfish or another variety, each one has its own charm that can elevate your home’s style. Now, let’s look at how you can incorporate these lovely starfish decorations into your space!

3 DIY Ideas for Starfish Decorations

1. Starfish Garland

During a family vacation to Anna Maria Island, I stumbled upon a whimsical starfish garland that instantly inspired me!

The perfect hint of coastal vibe!

I wanted to add a touch of coastal decor to a narrow wall in a high-traffic area of my home. Surrounded by multiple doorways, I needed something light and airy that wouldn’t clutter the space. Hanging the garland vertically was just the ticket! It adds visual interest without competing with the flow of the area.

Getting crafty! 🌟✨ Here’s a sneak peek of making starfish garland.

How to Create:

  1. Cut Your Twine: Decide on the length of your garland. For a vertical display, try a 5 to 6-foot length of twine. For a horizontal drape, adjust according to your space.
  2. Prepare the Starfish: Lay out your chosen size(s) of starfish and visualize the spacing. There is no right or wrong spacing here – you may prefer the airy look of spacing them 4-6 inches apart. Or try for a more layered approach with the starfish slightly overlapping each other.
  3. String the Starfish:
    • Attach the Twine: Tie one end of the twine around a starfish leg, securing with a double knot. Add a dab of hot glue for extra hold if needed.
    • Add More Starfish: Continue adding starfish, maintaining even spacing for a balanced look.
  4. Hang It Up: Now for the fun part! Here are a few display ideas:
    • Vertical Display: Hang it along a narrow wall to add interest without overpowering the space.
    • Kitchen Window: Hang it over your window to create a breezy, beachy feel.
    • Open Shelving: Drape it casually along open kitchen or living room shelves, weaving it around any other decor/items on the shelf.
    • Entryway or Staircase: Use it to add a coastal greeting in your entryway (hung vertically alongside your front door, for example) or add character along a staircase rail.

Tip: For an extra beachy feel, you can incorporate small seashells or wooden beads between the starfish. This extra layer brings added texture and makes the garland even more eye-catching.
