6 Easy Decorating Tricks That Make Your Home Look Better

Sharing is caring!

Little fixes for a better-looking home—some in just minutes!

Want your home to look a little more expensive? A little more pulled together?

Sometimes all it takes is TWO INCHES.

Seriously. Where you hang a picture. How you fill a pillow. Even what your mirror is reflecting.

These six easy decorating tricks can make a surprisingly BIG difference. And the best part? You can try most of them in just a few minutes.

Ready to steal a few?

1. Your Art Might Be Hanging Too High

Most people hang artwork based on the wall, not the furniture underneath it.

THE TRICK: Leave approximately 6–8 inches between the bottom of the frame and the top of your sofa, console or dresser.

Think of the artwork + furniture as ONE grouping, not two separate things.

THE WOW: Your wall suddenly looks intentionally designed instead of having a picture floating in the middle of nowhere.

BONUS TRICK: Don’t want another hole in the wall? Try LEANING your artwork instead! Set a larger framed piece directly on a console or dresser, leaning it securely against the wall. You can even overlap a smaller frame in front for a collected, layered look. Secure frames against tipping where needed.

Who says artwork has to hang? Lean it + layer it. (See more of this console here!)

2. The Pillow Insert Secret

Ever wonder why designer pillows look so much fuller than yours?

THE TRICK: Try an insert 2 inches bigger than your pillow cover.

20″ cover? → 22″ insert.

That extra fill pushes into the corners instead of leaving them floppy. Just make sure your cover and insert can handle the extra fullness.

THE WOW: Fuller, more luxurious-looking pillows. Same covers!

Still have floppy corners? Try a down-alternative insert with a little more structure.

3. The Furniture-Floating Fix

Sometimes the problem isn’t the rug. It’s how everything is positioned.

THE TRICK: Try pulling your sofa 4–6 inches away from the wall instead of pushing it all the way back.

Have chairs across the room? Bring them a little closer to the sofa, too.

THE WOW: Your furniture starts looking like a cozy conversation area instead of pieces lined up around the perimeter.

And if you have an area rug, try to position it so at least the front legs of your main seating pieces rest on it. This helps visually connect the entire grouping.

4. The Bathroom Counter Trick

This one is ridiculously simple.

THE TRICK: Grab a small tray or shallow dish. Set your hand soap + lotion side by side on it. Add a tiny sprig of greenery if there’s room.

That’s it. Thirty seconds.

THE WOW: Two everyday bottles suddenly look like a little styled collection instead of random stuff on the counter.

It’s one of my favorite ways to make something practical look pretty, too.

5. The Mirror Placement Trick

A mirror doesn’t automatically make a room feel brighter. It depends on what it’s reflecting!

THE TRICK: Before hanging a mirror, stand where it will go and look straight across the room.

What’s it going to reflect?

A pretty window + greenery? YES.

Your laundry pile + the back of a door? A cluttered shelf? Dark corner? Maybe not. 😂

THE WOW: A strategically placed mirror can bring more light, color + a beautiful view into your room.

A mirror doesn’t just reflect YOU. Make sure it’s reflecting something worth seeing! (Psst…. if you’re digging this bathroom… see more of it here.)

6. The Throw Blanket Trick

That perfectly folded throw isn’t always doing your sofa any favors.

THE TRICK: Fold it loosely in half lengthwise. Lay the middle over one sofa arm, letting one end fall onto the seat and the other hang down the outside.

Give it one little tug so it doesn’t look too perfect.

THE WOW: An instant relaxed, inviting look—like someone actually lives there. 😉

The trick? Let it drape naturally. A little imperfect looks a whole lot better. (And let a little fringe show. It’s like jewelry for your sofa.

BONUS: Your Room Might Not Need More Decorating

Ever clean a room and STILL feel like it looks messy?

There’s a reason. And it might have nothing to do with how clean it actually is.
