How to Make Your Home Feel More Welcoming: Finishing Touches That WOW Guests
You know those homes where you walk in and immediately think, Ooooh, I love it here.
Guess what? It’s actually not because they have the perfect sofa. Or the newest kitchen. Or because every room looks like it belongs in a magazine.
It’s the little things.
The way the house smells.
The pretty hand towel in the bathroom.
The bowl you can’t stop looking at.
The snack that somehow appears five minutes after you walk in.
Those little details are what make a home feel finished, welcoming + memorable. And they’re often the easiest part to get right.
So if you’ve ever looked around your house and thought, It’s fine…but it still feels like it’s missing something, start here.
1. They Notice How Your Home FEELS Before They Notice What’s In It
Before anyone studies your pillows or notices your paint color, they’re taking in the overall feeling.
Does it smell good?
Does it feel comfortable?
Does it feel like you?
That’s why I love having a few signature details I repeat again + again. A favorite scent. A little greenery. A certain color. Natural texture.
None of those things screams LOOK AT ME!
But together? They create a feeling.
And scent is a BIG one for me. You know how you can walk into someone’s home and immediately recognize their smell?
WENDY TIP: Pick one thing you’d love for someone to associate with your home—a scent, a color, a texture—and start repeating it.
2. They Notice the Everyday Stuff You Made Pretty
This is one of my favorite tricks because you aren’t decorating just for the sake of decorating.
You already need hand soap.
You already need towels.
You already need serving bowls, frames + glasses.
So why not make those things part of the look?
A fabulous-smelling soap in the guest bath, a fun towel hanging in the kitchen or one really beautiful serving piece can do more for a space than another random piece of decor.
And bonus: you actually USE them.
My own mix + match entertaining staples are white serving dishes in different sizes + fun shapes. They work with everything, and I can add color around them however I want.
Keep color simple; have fun with shapes.
And then I love having ONE fabulous statement serving piece—mine is a hand-painted wooden bowl from Mexico that my husband hauled home in his carry-on. (There’s quite a story on that!)
That’s the kind of piece people notice because it isn’t just pretty. It has a story.

3. They Notice the Thing That’s Different
Not everything in your home should be something they’ve seen 47 times before.
Maybe it’s the fabulous bowl you brought home from vacation.
An old piece you found at an antique shop.
A funky little object.
A piece of art with a story.
Those are usually the things people actually ask about.
And here’s the important part: you only need one.
Let it be the interesting thing instead of surrounding it with five more interesting things competing for attention.
This is also why I love little things like decorative beads. Mine happen to be aqua (shocking, I know 😂), and they’re an easy way to bring in color + texture without adding another big “decor piece.”
WENDY TIP: Next time you’re shopping for your home, ask yourself: Would I still notice this if there were 20 other things sitting next to it?
4. They Notice When Things Feel Like YOU
This is where your home goes from nicely decorated to memorable.
Maybe you’re always sneaking in blue. (Hi. 🙋♀️)
Maybe it’s stripes. Rattan. Brass. Weathered wood. A certain shade of green.
Whatever yours is, repeat it—don’t match it.
That repetition creates a thread through your home without making everything look like it came from the same collection.
For me, color is a big one. I almost always have some version of a watery blue or aqua somewhere. And I repeat textures too—rope, rattan, bleached wood, metal.
Those things become little signatures.
It’s also why I don’t think you need to chase every decorating trend. The homes I remember most aren’t the ones that looked the most current.
They’re the ones that felt like the person who lived there.

5. They DEFINITELY Notice How You Make Them Feel
And this one has almost nothing to do with decorating.
Did you offer them something to drink?
Was there something easy to snack on?
Did they feel comfortable grabbing a towel instead of wondering whether the pretty one was “just for show”?
Did you seem relaxed enough to actually enjoy having them there?
Those things count as finishing touches, too.
In fact, they’re some of my favorites.
I always like having a go-to “someone’s coming over” snack on hand. Mine are easy, crowd-pleasing + make you look VERY prepared. 😉 I even tucked the recipe for my Dilly Ranch Mix into my 12 Favorite Finishing Touches.
Nothing fancy. Just something you can dump in a bowl and suddenly look VERY prepared.
And then there’s my company-coming stash spot.
Mine is the laundry room counter. When people are coming and random stuff is still sitting around? Basket. Sweep. Hide.
Cost: $0.
Effectiveness: VERY high.
Your house doesn’t need to be perfect before people come over. A few thoughtful details can make it feel like you were completely ready for them. Even if ten minutes earlier you were sweeping everything off the counter into your designated hiding spot.
Not that I know anything about that. 😉
The Best Finishing Touches Aren’t Usually the Biggest Ones
You don’t need to completely redo a room to make it feel better.
Sometimes it’s a fabulous new scent. A better hand towel. A little greenery. A beautiful serving piece. Something with a story.
Little details—but ones chosen with intention.
And when you find the right ones? They don’t just make your home look better.
They make it feel more like yours.
And yes…people notice. 😉

Grow Fragrance Blondewood Air + Fabric Spray
The vanilla that went viral. Blondewood is a smooth, warm blend of vanilla bean, shea butter, teakwood + almond.
I use it in the air and over fabrics, linens + furniture when I want the house to smell GOOD. Especially before people come over.
WENDY TIP: This is part of my morning routine: I walk through the house with a few quick sprays before I sit down to work. Before company, I hit the sofa, pillows + entry again. Good-smelling house = instantly feels more pulled together.
A Little Color + Texture
Decorative Beaded Garland
I love decorative beads because they’re one of those ridiculously easy little finishing touches. Drape them over a bowl, let them spill out of a tray or tuck them into a coffee table grouping.
And, yes, mine involve aqua. 💙
WENDY TIP: Don’t arrange them too perfectly. Let them fall naturally—that’s what keeps them looking relaxed instead of “decorated.”
A Fun Towel
In the kitchen, I like them thin + quick-drying—and pretty enough that I actually want them hanging out where everyone can see them.
It’s such a small thing, but it’s exactly the kind of detail that adds color + personality without asking you to redecorate anything.
And that’s really the whole idea:
Don’t underestimate the little things.
They’re what take a home from nice to “Ooooh, I love it here.”
